The oldest masonry structure of its kind in the continental United States, Castillo de San Marcos was built and constructed between 1672 and 1695 by the Spanish to guard the coastline against invasion. In addition to being a prime example of the “bastion system” of fortification, it is one of only two fortifications in the world built out of coquina, a semi-rare form of limestone. Open every day of the year (except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day), visitors can explore the Castillo on their own as well as during a ranger-led tours. Regular programs also include cannon firings, weaponry demonstrations, and more.
